Dressing room in turmoil? Gautam Gambhir’s Shubman Gill T20 World Cup omission leaves Team India players ‘confused’ and ‘insecure’
Gautam Gambhir’s decision to omit Shubman Gill from the T20 World Cup squad has reportedly upset Team India’s dressing room. Sources claim that players were left feeling confused and insecure as the surprise call sparked debate over selection clarity and team morale.
Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir created a stir when he left Subman Gill has been left out of the 2026 T20 World Cup squad. BCCI released the news on December 20 and many people—fans and players—caught off guard. Gill had been vice-captain for T20Is this year and was a regular opener. His recent form wasn’t great but the management continued to support him so everyone thought he would do well.
Things look complicated in the locker room. According to a PTI report, Gambhir’s move left the players feeling uneasy and a bit nervous. Some are completely confused; Others admit they are insecure. If someone like Gill (India’s Test and ODI captain) can be dropped, there is a feeling that no one’s place is truly safe.
Now coming to Gill’s numbers: yes, he was struggling in the T20Is. He could not hit a single fifty in his last 18 innings. Is it the best? A score of 47 against Pakistan in the Asia Cup in September. In the last five-match T20I series against South Africa, he scored just 4, 0 and 28 runs in his three matches.
So where does Gill go from here? With the World Cup door closed for now, he will try to find his touch again in domestic cricket. He is set to play for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy but no one is sure how many matches he will actually play. We still have a chance to get back into shape. Moreover, Gill, who has taken over the ODI captaincy this year, is expected to lead the team in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11. The T20 World Cup is just six weeks away and this represents a pivotal moment for Gambhir. Although India have shown their strength in white-ball cricket this year by winning the Champions Trophy in ODIs and the men’s T20 Asia Cup, a disappointing performance in Test cricket, highlighted by two home whitewashes, has cast doubt on his future as coach of the red-ball team.
The report also stated that if India fails to live up to expectations during the T20 World Cup, the BCCI will have enough time to decide.
“The final sayrs in the BCCI will have enough time to take a conscious call on split coaching or having a single coach in different formats after analyzing India’s performance in the global meet,” it said.
