Mallikarjun Kharge accuses Modi govt of weakening Congress-era institutions, MGNREGA

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the Modi government of weakening institutions and schemes, including MGNREGA, built by the erstwhile Congress administration and appealed to the party to resist it.

“During Sonia Gandhi’s Congress presidency, the UPA government expanded the protection of human rights. When Manmohan Singh became prime minister, RTI, RTE, Food Security, MGNREGA, forest rights and land acquisition laws were enacted. Over the past 11 years, the Modi government has weakened the institutions built by the Congress,” Kharge said at the Congress foundation day event.

Warning RSS-BJP leaders not to see the Congress as a spent force, he said the Congress would fight back even if it did not have the strength. “Our strength may be less but our backbone is not weak. We believe in religion but we do not seek votes in the name of religion. But some have turned religion into politics. RSS leaders had once refused to accept even the Tricolor and Vande Mataram and now they are trampling on the rights of the people. We must stand tall and resist such attempts.”
