Rep. Ilhan Omar’s defense of Somalia’s territorial claims and opposition to recognition of an independent Somaliland has been criticized as authorities step up investigations into allegations of mass fraud in her state.

One analyst argued that the alleged corruption scandal involving Somali communities in Minnesota makes sense when comparing failures in Somalia with the stability of Somaliland, an autonomous region whose recognition Omar has opposed.

Michael Rubin, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, argued that it is “important” to highlight the difference between the two regions.

“The corruption emerging in Minnesota reflects the governance failures that have plagued Somalia for decades,” Rubin told Fox News Digital.

“Somaliland has charted a completely different path, relying on domestic accountability rather than international aid, and that distinction is important right now,” he said.

Minnesota has been dragged into controversy after it was revealed that fraud losses across multiple government programs since 2018 could total billions of dollars, according to a report. Wall Street Magazine report.

Federal officials also repealed a $250 million plan tied to the “Feeding Our Future” case, for example; this resulted in 78 indictments and dozens of convictions.

The incident was described by FBI Director Kash Patel as “the tip of a very large iceberg.”

The scandal gained renewed attention over the weekend after independent commentator Nick Shirley posted a viral video showing shuttered nurseries billing the government millions of dollars, even appearing to serve very few children.

Omar has since defended her support for the MEALS Act; Critics of the law say it weakens surveillance measures that are then exploited by fraudulent operators.

But Rubin argues that Omar’s broader worldview on Somalia also raises questions about her goals.

“Ilhan Omar left Somalia, but Somalia never abandoned her,” Rubin said. “In his speeches in Somali, he refers to Somalia as his home, not America, and so it is clear that he is trying to advance Somali interests on the global stage.”

He claimed that Omar’s opposition to recognizing Somaliland was due to Somalia’s internal politics rather than US strategic interests.

Rubin said Omar opposes policies that would legitimize the separatist region, saying, “Clan dynamics shape Somali politics, and the same perspective appears to shape her position in Somaliland.” he said.

“American interests do not appear to factor significantly into this calculation,” he added.

Meanwhile, Somaliland continues to attract increasing international attention.

After more than three decades of de facto independence, the self-governed region has maintained internal security, built democratic institutions, and established closer diplomatic relations with Israel.

Somaliland has signaled its interest in joining the Abraham Accords, positioning itself as a potential partner for US and Israeli interests in the Horn of Africa.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel has established full diplomatic relations with Somaliland, stating that this move is in line with the spirit of the Abraham Accords brokered by the USA.

The announcement made Israel the first UN member state to recognize the self-proclaimed state, which has been seeking international recognition for more than three decades.

“The more people learn about Somaliland’s record, the more they will question why the United States continues to send billions of dollars to Somalia’s internationally recognized government while turning a blind eye to a more reliable partner,” Rubin added.

President Trump was also reportedly “exploring” recognition of Somaliland in August.

Trump told the New York Post that he needed to “study” Netanyahu’s course, asking of the golf course “Does anyone really know what Somaliland is?” he asked.

“We’re going to work on it. I work on a lot of things and I always make great decisions and they turn out to be the right ones,” Trump said.

Rubin stated that the issue could gain more momentum as Netanyahu is expected to discuss regional security issues with Trump this week.

“Somaliland’s situation dovetails with Trump’s broader foreign policy approach,” Rubin said.

“He is business-friendly, security-focused and takes responsibility for his own territory. He wants partnership, not constant aid. By any reasonable measure, it makes sense to recognize Somaliland.”
