At least six people, including a two-year-old girl, were killed when gunmen opened fire on a popular beach in South America.

Police said the horrific incident took place around 9 a.m. local time in Puerto Lopez, in southwestern Ecuador.

Many people with automatic weapons opened fire on a group of people in the city, killing six people and wounding three others.

District police commander Col. William Acurio added that the victims included a girl “about two years old.” He said the attackers then “fled” the scene.

The suspects have still not been caught, but preliminary investigations suggest that disagreements between gangs led to the incident.

The incident took place amid a violent crime wave over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of nine people in Puerto Lopez, local media reported.
