Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said, “When the first grass turned, Prime Minister William Forgan Smith referred to as the ‘King George V Silver Jubilee Bridge’ and when he died, he became the King George V monument bridge.
“At that time, in 1937, the cabinet decided to name the bridge after an experienced public official John Douglas Story.”

The rest is history as they say.
However, the bridge now needs full restoration because of the criticism of the Brisbane Municipal Assembly neglected for years and led leaving the structure for years. Federal Government promised $ 2.25 million Towards the work to cover the restoration of the bridge.

Nigel Chamier, President of Story Bridge Restoration Committee, said that in 2040, the restoration of the entire building could be completed on time for the centenary of the bridge and the total price tag could easily reach hundreds of millions.
“Many numbers have been thrown, [but] We know that changing bridges is not an option, Chamier said.
“It is unacceptable to give a funeral to the 100th birthday to the story bridge.”
