NHRC Steps In After Brutal Murder Of Student In Tripura | World News

Tripura Student Murder: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) took notice of the murder of a student from Tripura in Dehradun and asked the authorities to ensure the safety of students from North Eastern states residing in Uttarakhand.

The victim, Angel Chakma, 24, who lives in Tripura’s Unakoti district, had an argument with her younger brother Michael, Manipur resident Suraj Khawas (22), currently living in Dehradun, and his five friends in Selakui market on December 9.

The defendant allegedly attacked Angel with a knife and brass knuckles, after which he was taken to hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries on December 26.

A statement from the NHRC said that a Bench headed by Member Priyank Kanoongo issued a notification to the State Government calling for a detailed report on the steps taken so far in the matter.

Angel’s father, Tarun Chakma, who is currently serving with the Border Security Force (BSF) in Manipur, alleged that “racial slurs” were hurled at his son during the attack. According to him, the attackers called Angel “Chinese” before attacking him.

The commission also said it has directed the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police of Uttarakhand to ensure the safety and security of students from the Northeast across the state on top priority.

“The report is expected to include details of the investigation, steps taken to apprehend the accused and measures initiated to prevent recurrence of such incidents,” the NHRC said. he added. Meanwhile, the Uttarakhand Police said that five of the six people allegedly involved in the December 9 incident were arrested, and Yagyaraj Awasthi, who lives in Kanchanpur district of Nepal, is still at large.

They also announced that a reward of Rs 25,000 would be given to the only fugitive accused living in Nepal and said that a team had been sent to the neighboring country.

According to the police, based on the complaint filed by Michael Chakma on December 12, a case was registered for causing bodily harm and criminal intimidation under sections 115(2), 118 and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and an investigation was initiated.

Later, according to Angel’s medical report, Article 109 of the BNS regarding attempted murder was added to the case and five defendants, including two minors, were arrested on the same day. Following Angel’s death, police said sections 103(1) of the BNS, which deals with murder, and sections 3(5), which deals with joint responsibility, were added to the charges.

It was stated that the accused persons arrested, apart from Suraj Khawas, were Avinash Negi (25) and Sumit (25). Angel Chakma was a final year MBA student at a college in Dehradun.
