Zelensky ‘defies Trump’ with US troops in Ukraine demand as peace talks on brink | World | News

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has hinted that US troops could be involved in a peace plan with Russia, although Donald Trump has previously rejected the idea. This comes as the US President continues to meet with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in the region.

Zelensky has since reportedly told the media in a WhatsApp chat that “Kiev has discussed with President Trump the presence of US troops in Ukraine.” However, there are concerns that this move could be seen as an escalation of the situation.

Donald Trump He had previously insisted that the US could help with air support and other security tools, but that they would not send troops to the region. He said Ukraine could not rely on joining NATO as its primary form of security.

Speaking to reporters earlier today, the US President said world leaders were “good people” who “wanted to end the war”. He added that the conflict in Ukraine is closer to them because “there is an ocean that separates us.”

Trump continued: “So this is a different thing for them. They’re willing to put people down when it comes to security.”

European troops may be part of the deal for Kiev, although Trump has emphasized that US troops will not be deployed in Ukraine as part of security guarantees.

Russia recently accused Ukraine of bombing one of Putin’s presidential palaces. Although Zelensky denied the allegation, Trump said he was “very angry” when he heard the news and that “it wasn’t the right time to do any of this.”

Trump is now reportedly arranging a meeting between Putin and Zelensky in which he will not initially be present. Of the plans, he added: “If this works then I’ll go into the (triple) area and shut it down.”
