Dhurandhar actor Rakesh Bedi says ‘pure comedy’ films are not being made in Bollywood: ‘Chupke Chupke, Padosan are…’

Referring to classics like Chupke Chupke, Chashme Buddoor, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Padosan, Rakesh Bedi emphasized how every character in these films carries a natural sense of humour; this is something he feels is missing from movies now.

Along with Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, Rakesh Bedi also received critical acclaim for his outstanding performance as Pakistani politician Jameel Jamali in Dhurandhar. The spy thriller directed by Aditya Dhar, which also stars Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, R Madhavan, Sara Arjun and Danish Pandor in lead roles, has already earned over Rs 750 crore in India and grossed over Rs 1100 crore worldwide.

Bedi is known for his iconic comic roles in Chashme Buddoor and Shrimaan Shrimati and he brought some humor to his scenes in Dhurandhar too. In a recent interview with IANS, the veteran actor expressed his concern that pure comedy films are becoming increasingly rare in today’s Bollywood. Referring to classics like Chupke Chupke, Chashme Buddoor, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi and Padosan, he emphasized that every character in these films has a natural sense of humour; this is something he feels is missing from movies anymore.

The Gadar 2 actor said, “I feel that there are no comedy films being made these days. Nobody is making comedy films. I am talking about pure comedy. I am not talking about comedy in the film. In fact, I am not even talking about the comedian in the film. For example, Chupke Chupke is a cult film. It is a comedy film. There is no comedian in it. Likewise, Chashme Baddur was there. Similarly, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi was there. Or Padosan was there. So, I think the average of comedy films in our country is very low, once a decade a pure comedy film is now the average in our country.”

Rakesh Bedi concluded, “There are two good serials – Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! and Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Coincidentally, I am a part of both of them. Both are huge hits in their respective fields. In both, the humor works at a very natural level. Otherwise, such a long comedy cannot continue. So, these are two such serials that are experimenting with comedy. They are venturing out. No one else is doing this.”

Meanwhile, Rakesh Bedi will reprise his role as Jameel Jamali in Dhurandhar 2, which is scheduled to release in theaters on March 19, 2026. The much-anticipated sequel will clash at the box office with Yash’s pan-Indian gangster drama Toxic and Adivi Sesh, Mrunal Thakur-starrer action drama Dacoit. All three films will be released in theaters during Eid, Gudi Padwa and Ugadi festivities.
