New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani began fueling the debate by appointing Ramzi Kassem, a lawyer who defended an Al Qaeda member, as the Chief Counsel of his transition team. Ramzi Kassem was part of the legal team representing al-Qaeda operative Ahmed al-Darbi, who was convicted in 2017 for his role in the 2002 bombing of the French oil tanker Limburg off the coast of Yemen.
