Health on Wheels for Chhattisgarh Tribals

Raipur: For the first time, health services will reach the doorsteps of primitive tribes living in remote and densely forested villages of Chhattisgarh, with the prime minister on Wednesday sending 57 mobile health units to the region.

An official spokesperson said that with the launch of these mobile medical units, preparations for the provision of regular health services to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in the state are now complete.

Mobile medical units were launched under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) scheme.

The deployment of these units will ensure regular healthcare coverage of more than 2,100 villages and settlements in 18 districts of the state.

More than two lakh people belonging to PVTGs are expected to directly benefit from this initiative.

Mr. Sai said families living in mountainous and inaccessible areas will now have access to medical examination and treatment facilities in their villages.

He described the initiative as ‘comprehensive engagement and a strong foundation for the health security of tribal communities’.

He said the most socially, economically and educationally marginalized sections of society belong to PVTGs.

Out of the state’s population of nearly three million, around 2.30 lakh PVTG individuals live in 2,100 settlements in 18 districts.

Each mobile health unit will have a doctor, nurse, laboratory technician and local volunteers.

25 types of diagnostic tests will be performed in the units and 106 types of medicines will be provided free of charge.
