Sadiq Khan blasted for ‘pathetic’ EU New Year’s firework display – ‘we left 10 years ago!’ | UK | News

Angry Brits have criticized Sadiq Khan after he displayed the EU flag at a New Year fireworks display in London. At the stroke of midnight, 100,000 people gathered on the banks of the River Thames to watch as more than 12,000 fireworks lit up the night sky, with millions of viewers watching at home. But the exhibition was labeled a “disgrace” because it showed the stars of the European Union flag on the London Eye.
One social media user wrote: “We voted to leave the EU 10 years ago and Sadiq Khan is still raising his flag at New Year’s fireworks. Pathetic beyond belief.” Another person said: “What a disgrace that the EU flag was displayed in front of London’s eyes!” A third added: “Almost exactly ten years later and the EU flag is still on fireworks in London on New Year’s Eve. They will never get over losing a democratic election.”
A fourth similarly wrote of X: “Did I see an EU flag being placed on the London Eye during the fireworks? This is so sad.”
The flashy ad also featured footage from the movie Wicked: For Good, which is being screened as part of an event partnership with Universal Pictures.
In response, one social media user wrote: “What Was Sadiq Khan’s Happy New Year Moaning About His Typical Unnecessary Wake Up Messages And Poor Promotion That We All Had To Pay For A Day At The London Fireworks, folks!”
Another part of the show featured national flags from around the world, with the voice-over stating “This is what England means to me”.
The narrator said: “This is what England means to me: the real England.
“When it’s sunny it’s hot. When it’s cold it’s rubbish. England is my cup of tea. How many sugars? I’m sweet enough.”
“England to me is the sharp-cut Caribbean barbers.
“Christian neighbors say Happy Hanukkah, my friend, and Muslim mothers say Merry Christmas, my love.
“You think you see the flags now? Wait until the World Cup starts. Then you’ll understand the flags, son.
“Because that’s what England means to me. It’s about loving each other no matter what color you are, where you’re from or who your God is. Because this is England. This is the United Kingdom.”
Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said ahead of the fireworks display: “I am delighted to have demonstrated once again why London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations are the most spectacular in the world.
“The eyes of the world were looking at us as we lit up our famous skyline with our best ever fireworks and light display – all set to incredible music. From celebrating our great year of women’s sport and Europe beating the USA in the Ryder Cup, to celebrating our diversity and looking forward to a fantastic 2026, we sent the message that London will always be a city of hope and a place for everyone.”
