College Football: Oregon shuts out Texas Tech to win the Orange Bowl

Oregon beat Texas Tech 16-0 to win the Orange Bowl and advance into the College Football Playoff with a dominant defensive showing at Hard Rock Stadium on Thursday.

The Ducks committed four turnovers in the win, holding the Red Raiders to just 206 yards of total offense. The Red Raiders defense kept Texas Tech in the game with an interception and by turning the Ducks over on downs, but it wasn’t enough.

The first half of Oregon-Texas Tech was low scoring. The Ducks marched down the field on the opening drive, but after Dante Moore’s third-down sack, they had to settle for Atticus Sappington’s 50-yard field goal to make it 3-0.

The Ducks continued to move the ball, but the Texas Tech defense remained strong in its own end. Following the field goal, the Ducks turned the ball over on downs at the Red Raiders’ 23-yard line on offensive possession.

Texas Tech quarterback Behren Morton, Brandon Finney Jr. He was intercepted by , giving the Ducks good field position at the Red Raiders’ 35-yard line, but the defense still held up. The Red Raiders forced a 10-yard loss and an Oregon punt.

Texas Tech had nine yards of offense in the first quarter but made an explosive play in the second quarter. Running back J’Koby Williams broke the tackle and crossed into Ducks territory on a 50-yard run.

But the Red Raiders offense did nothing else afterward, and kicker Stone Harrington missed a 54-yard field goal, keeping the score at 3-0. Oregon took control of midfield and led a 14-play, 62-yard drive to the Texas Tech two-yard line, but the defense once again slammed the door, causing a turnover on downs.

The Texas Tech offense then promptly gave the ball back, with running back Cameron Dickey fumbled after the first two downs and recovered by Finney. Oregon took over at Texas Tech’s 29-yard line, but the Red Raiders defense once again held strong and forced a field goal.

Sappington kicked a 39-yard field goal to give the Ducks a 6-0 lead under two minutes into the second quarter, which was the score at halftime.

The beginning of the third quarter was the same. Texas Tech got the ball first but went out by three points.

Oregon got the ball back at midfield following a 28-yard return, but the Texas Tech defense once again forced another turnover on fourth-and-two at the Red Raiders’ 33-yard line.

The Ducks’ lone goal was set up by their defense. Morton was tackled by Matayo Uiagalelei, who picked up the ball and returned it to the Texas Tech six-yard line. Running back Jordan Davison scored a six-yard rushing touchdown on the next play, giving the Ducks a 13-0 lead.

Following the possession, Texas Tech moved the ball beyond midfield, but Oregon stopped them on fourth-and-one.

Texas Tech’s defense then stepped up again and stopped Moore on fourth down, giving the offense the ball at their own 45-yard line. Morton homered for Terrance Carter Jr. at the end of the third quarter. They moved into the red zone for the first time when he connected on a deep ball down the sideline.

But Oregon’s defense closed the door with its fourth takeaway of the game. Finney beat Morton in the end zone, securing his second interception of the game and preserving the Ducks’ 13-0 lead.

Sappington shot after the intervention to make the score 16-0 and the score remained final.

Oregon will face the winner of Indiana and Alabama in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
