Highway authority takes BIG step for cars on new FASTag issued after…; Here’s what it means for commuters

NHAI will finalize the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new FASTags issued from February 1, 2026. Vehicle verification will be completed through VAHAN prior to activation and toll payments will be simplified. Existing FASTags will not need KYV unless problems arise, which will increase user convenience on highways.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a significant change in the FASTag system for cars, jeeps and pickup trucks. From February 1, 2026, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process will no longer be required for the newly issued FASTags, which aims to solve post-activation verification issues faced by private vehicle owners.
What Does the Change Mean for New FASTag Users?
Earlier, KYV was a mandatory post-activation step where vehicle owners had to confirm vehicle details even after submitting valid documents at the time of purchase. This often caused delays and repeated follow-ups.
Under the new system, vehicle verification will be completed before FASTag is activated and there will be no need for any additional checks after issuance. This update is applicable to FASTags purchased through both online platforms and physical outlets, allowing vehicle owners to use FASTag immediately after activation without facing verification-related interruptions.
Impact on Existing FASTag Holders
KYV will no longer be required routinely for vehicles that already have an active FASTag. Users will need to fill KYV only in certain cases, such as complaints regarding incorrect FASTag issuance, damaged or loose tags, or suspected misuse. If no issues are reported, existing FASTag holders can continue to use their tags without the need for additional verification steps.
Stronger Pre-Activation Controls of Banks
To ensure smooth functioning of the new system, NHAI has mandated stricter pre-activation verification standards for banks issuing FASTag. Banks will now verify vehicle details from VAHAN database before activating FASTag.
In exceptional cases where VAHAN data is not available, banks must cross-check the details using the vehicle registration document. Responsibility for correct verification now rests entirely with the issuing banks and post-activation KYV has been completely stopped.
Benefits to Road Users
Removing the post-activation KYV step is expected to simplify the FASTag experience for private vehicle owners and reduce verification-related delays and complaints. By transferring the responsibility to banks before activation, NHAI aims to facilitate toll payments and increase overall convenience for motorists on national highways.
This move is part of NHAI’s broader effort to make digital toll collection faster and more user-friendly and provide a smoother journey to millions of private vehicle users across the country.
