Murderer among two prisoners on the run after escaping from jail on New Year’s Day

A murderer is among two inmates wanted by police after escaping from prison on New Year’s Day.

Avon and Somerset Police are frantically searching for convicted murderers Matthew Armstrong and Daniel Washbourne, who have a history of violent crime.

The pair escaped from HMP Leyhill between 5pm and 8pm on January 1.

A third prisoner, suspected of escaping at the same time, was also arrested today.

The missing couple are not from around the prison in South Gloucestershire and are known to have connections across the country.

Armstrong, 35, is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, with red hair and scars on his forehead.

He was last seen wearing a burgundy or orange coat, a gray hat, gray sweatpants with blue on the sides, and black boots.

Washbourne, 40, is described as a white male, approximately 6 feet tall, slim, with brown hair and clean shaven.

He was last seen wearing a cream fleece, blue sweatpants, a blue hat and black sneakers.

According to police, Armstrong is known to have links to Warwickshire and Washbourne to Herefordshire.
