British, French warplanes strike suspected ISIS facility near Palmyra in Syria

In England, British and French warplanes hit an underground facility believed to be used by ISIS militants to store weapons and explosives. Department of Defense It was approved on Sunday.

The attack took place on Saturday evening in the mountainous region north of Palmyra in Syria’s Homs province.

The Ministry of Defense said in a statement that Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4 fighter jets, supported by the Voyager refueling tanker, together with French aircraft, attacked the access tunnels leading to the underground area.

Paveway IV precision-guided bombs were also used in the operation.

The ministry said that the evaluation was ongoing, but initial indicators showed that the target was successfully hit.

Britain and France are partners in the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, which was set up to combat the extremist group, which has previously seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria.

British Defense Secretary Sir John Healey said the attack showed Britain’s determination to prevent a resurgence of the Islamic State and to stand “shoulder to shoulder with our allies” against extremist violence in the Middle East.

The operation took place during a period of ongoing US military activities in Syria, where American forces are conducting counter-terrorism missions in the country.

In December, the Trump administration also ordered large-scale US strikes on central Syria.

This was in retaliation for an ambush near Palmyra in which two US soldiers and an American civilian translator were killed.

As Fox News Digital previously reported, ISIS remains an active and persistent threat despite sustained pressure from coalition forces, according to U.S. Central Command.

CENTCOM said that recent US operations in the region also targeted infrastructure and weapons facilities in central Syria.

“We will not slow down,” CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said on Dec. 30.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to work with regional partners to root out the ISIS threat to U.S. and regional security.”
