At the time of the attack, Jarmal Singh was shot dead while attending a ceremony at the Marigold Marriage Palace. According to officials, two unidentified gunmen entered the facility between 2.30pm and 3pm, targeted Singh and shot him in the head at close range. A chilling video of the incident was shared by Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on X; In this video, two men dressed in hoodies and jeans walk through the crowd with firearms in their hands before killing the 50-year-old sarpanch.
In the chilling video, miscreants can be seen advancing towards Jarmal Singh, who is sitting at a table wearing a yellow turban and talking to another guest. A few minutes later, they opened fire and fled the place on foot. “We strongly condemn the cold-blooded murder of Sarpanch Jarmal Singh of Valtoha village (Tarn Taran), who was shot dead at a wedding ceremony in Amritsar today,” Badal said.
Police sources told TOI that the gunmen shot Singh dead immediately after the bride and groom left the venue and despite the presence of a large number of wedding guests, the attackers did not try to hide their identity. “The attackers came with a pre-planned intention,” a police spokesperson was quoted as saying by TOI. “Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers did not cover their faces, and we suspect that the victim was under intense surveillance before the incident,” he added.
Who is behind AAP Sarpanch murder?
According to TOI, after Jarmal Singh succumbed to his injuries, gangster Prabh Dasuwal, Donny Bal and others claimed responsibility for the murder in a purported video. Police visited the scene, took security camera footage and recorded eyewitness statements. The police started an operation to identify and capture the attackers.
Amritsar deputy commissioner of police (Investigation) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said, “We are investigating the incident from all angles. The culprits will be caught soon.” he said. Additional deputy commissioner JS Walia said the investigation was ongoing. “We have cordoned off the facility and are questioning guests,” Walia said. “CCTV footage is being analyzed to trace the suspect’s escape route,” he added.
This was not the first attempt on Singh’s life. Police records reveal that the sarpanch survived three previous murder attempts. No arrests have been made so far.
