Supreme Court signs MoU with Bhutan apex court for exchange of law clerks, says CJI Surya Kant

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday (January 5, 2026) said that the Supreme Court has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Bhutan’s highest court to facilitate the exchange of young lawyers.
The CJI said at the beginning of the proceedings that as per the MoU, two law clerks from Bhutan would be appointed by the Supreme Court for a period of three months.
“Clerks will receive the same remuneration as Indian law clerks and their travel expenses will be borne by the Supreme Court,” the CJI said. Introducing the law clerks to the packed chamber, the CJI described them as “young and intelligent” and said they would be posted in different courts during their tenure.
“We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Supreme Court of Bhutan and based on that, there will be two law clerks who will be paid as per our fees and will be there for a period of three months. We will take care of their travel, both will work in different courts, both are very intelligent,” the CJI said.
He stated that the initiative aims to strengthen judicial cooperation and strengthen institutional ties between the two countries.
