POLL: Is it a good thing that Donald Trump will be running Venezuela? | World | News

As a result of a “large-scale strike” in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro was captured and imprisoned in the United States with his wife Cilia Flores over the weekend. He faces drug and weapons charges.
Following the operation, Donald Trump said the US would “manage” Venezuela before the transition took place. Politician Delcy Rodríguez was elected interim leader of the country.
But Mr Trump’s Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, suggested the US would not run Venezuela on a day-to-day basis other than enforcing an existing “oil quarantine”. But the US President reiterated Sunday night that “the responsibility lies with us.” Ms. Rodriguez, meanwhile, called on the Republican president to “cooperate.”
“We’re going to make this work, we’re going to fix it,” Mr. Trump told reporters.
“That’s the kind of control the president was pointing to when he said that,” Mr. Rubio told CBS.
He added: “We are continuing the lockdown and expect to see changes not only in the way the oil industry is run for the benefit of the public, but also in stopping drug trafficking.”
Maduro and Flores are accused of participating in a narco-terrorism conspiracy. Maduro will make his first appearance in Manhattan federal court today.
He and other Venezuelan officials were indicted in 2020; The U.S. Department of Justice has unsealed a new indictment against Mr. Maduro and his wife, alleging that his administration is a “corrupt, illegitimate government” fueled by a drug-smuggling operation that brought cocaine into the United States.

The United States does not recognize Maduro as the leader of Venezuela.
Mr. Rubio insisted that U.S. actions cannot be compared to what the country did in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“The entire foreign policy apparatus thinks everything is Libya, everything is Iraq, everything is Afghanistan,” Rubio said.
“This is not the Middle East. Our mission here is also very different. This is the Western Hemisphere.”
Trump’s foreign policy leader also suggested the United States would give Mr. Maduro’s subordinates, currently in charge of Venezuela, time to run the country, saying: “We will judge everything by what they do.”
