Maduro and wife arrive at New York court
The deposed Venezuelan president and his wife arrived at a New York courthouse on Monday (Tuesday AEDT) where they were to be charged.
Maduro was handcuffed and surrounded by heavily armored federal agents and NYPD police officers as he was taken from his jail cell in Brooklyn to the court precinct in Lower Manhattan.
The armored vehicle carrying Maduro and his wife arrived at the courthouse at around 7.45 on Monday morning. During the transfer, scores of heavily armed DEA officers and NYPD police took to the streets.
Maduro and Flores were extradited to the United States on Saturday night after being captured by US forces during a daring months-long military campaign.
The dramatic capture has emboldened Donald Trump, who last night hinted he might take military action in Colombia and Greenland and told Mexico to “get its act together”.
