Arizona Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon was the latest NFL coach to be knocked out on “Black Monday,” being fired a day after the team suffered its ninth straight loss of the season.
The move was announced via the team’s website after the Cardinals ended the season with a 37-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

“Jonathan is very smart, motivated, enthusiastic, intelligent and a great coach,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said at a news conference Monday.

“It made us better, but I think as you all know, this league is about wins and losses. Wins and losses are there, especially this year. We felt we were going in the wrong direction and we had to change course.”
The 43-year-old Gannon was unavailable to the media after the game and had little to elaborate on after the Cardinals finished 3-14.

“Not a great season,” he said when asked to summarize the season. “There will be a lot of hardship, but there will also be growth.”
“My best moment? My best moment didn’t happen,” he continued. “There will be growth starting this year. That’s a good question.”

Gannon refused to speculate about his future, telling reporters that Monday would look like “the same 24 hours” as any other Monday after failing to make the play-offs. But this was not the case.
His dismissal came after three seasons with the organization, but the 2024 NFL season has been Gannon’s worst by far.
The Cardinals stormed out of the gate with two straight wins, but injuries to stars like Kyler Murray and James Conner, combined with sloppy, self-inflicted mistakes (most notably Emari Demercado’s premature celebration and fumble at the goal line) quickly ended any realistic playoff hopes.

Gannon even had his own sideline error when he was fined $100,000 by the NFL for appearing to get into an altercation with Demercado following a dropped ball.
Gannon parted ways with the organization with a 15-36 record.
