Australians now have 24/7 access to trusted health advice with 1800MEDICARE, offering free nationwide support for those experiencing illness, injury or uncertainty.
The service connects callers to a registered nurse who will listen, assess symptoms and direct people to the right method of care.
A Medicare card is not required; This means the service is free and available to visitors, international students, and others who do not have access to Medicare.
However, charges may apply for subsequent recommended treatment.
Anyone in Australia can call if they want advice for themselves, a child, an elderly relative or someone they care for.
The service encourages people to call this number as the first point of contact for non-urgent health issues, helping people make more informed decisions and reducing pressure on the emergency departments of the country’s public hospitals.
