Trump says using US military is ‘always an option’ for acquiring Greenland | US news

Donald Trump and his team are exploring “a range of options” for seizing Greenland, and using the US military to do so is “always an option,” the White House said in a statement on Tuesday.

“President Trump has made the well-known case that seizing Greenland is a national security priority for the United States and that deterring our adversaries in the Arctic is vital. The President and his team are discussing a range of options to achieve this important foreign policy objective, and of course using the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

Leavitt’s comments come as leaders of major European powers oppose Trump’s desire to bring the polar region into US hands. The US president renewed his call for the US to seize Greenland after Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro was arrested under cover of night over the weekend.

Trump said on Sunday that he needed Greenland “badly”, causing tensions to rise between the US, the semi-autonomous Danish region and Europe.

White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller had previously claimed in an interview with CNN that there would be no need for military intervention to seize the island because “no one is going to fight the United States militarily over the future of Greenland.”
