Fury as customer complains over ‘insane’ cup of tea price | World | News

A shopper was left furious after being charged an “insane” price for a cup of tea at her local cafe. The man shared pictures of the tea on Reddit and called the price “ridiculous.”

Paid $6.50 (Australian) for a pot of tea at Pattison’s Pattiserie in Sydney; This works out to £3.24. However, it contained only enough ingredients for one glass, making the man feel like he had been defrauded. As reported by news.com.auHe said: “Downsizing is becoming a travesty in this city.

“While waiting for Missus, I encountered the worst case of shrinkage ever.”

He added: “Tea drinkers in Australia get ripped off a lot.” Others, meanwhile, said they were tired of paying “nearly the same amount as a coffee” for “20-cent teabags and hot water.”

“There’s not much of a tea culture in Australia, so loose leaves are considered ‘fancy’ so they can jump off the roof,” one person noted in the Reddit thread.

But others have pointed out that you get more than just booze when dining out. One person said: “You pay for the table, not your tea.”

Another replied: “This is for the ambience. Also for rent, labor and utilities.” A third wrote: “You can drink tea two ways, at home or expensively. Ordering tea outside the home is really asking for it.”

Prices for a cup of tea in the UK vary between cafes and locations, with prices being higher in major cities such as London. You can pick up a mug for £1.55 at Greggs and £3.15 at Costa.

In independent cafes the fee varies between £2 and £3.30. Meanwhile, the cost of making a cup of tea at home is much lower, with supermarkets selling 80 standard bags from brands such as Tetley, Yorkshire Tea and PG Tips for between £3 and £5.
