2 killed, 6 injured in Salt Lake City LDS church funeral shooting

Two people were killed and six others were injured in a shooting that occurred in Salt Lake City on Wednesday evening outside the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as people were gathering for a funeral.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement that it was aware of a “serious incident” that occurred Wednesday outside the church meetinghouse at 660 North Redwood Road in Salt Lake City while a memorial service was being held in the chapel.

According to the Salt Lake Police Department, three of the six injured people were stated to be in critical condition. Some victims were transported to a local hospital by private vehicle before officers arrived on the scene, authorities said.

“The church is cooperating with law enforcement and is grateful for the efforts of first responders,” the church said. he said. “Until further information becomes available, all questions regarding this incident will be directed to the Salt Lake City Police Department. We pray for everyone affected by this tragedy and express our deep concern that any sacred site for worship should be subject to any form of violence.”

FBI Salt Lake City said in a statement that it was aware of the incident and offered assistance to local law enforcement.

The Denver Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said special agents responded to a reported shooting in the 600 block of N. Redwood Rd. Assisting local law enforcement with their investigations.

Police said they did not have a detailed description of the suspect’s vehicle, but officers searched the area from Redwood Road to the Jordan River.
