IWF finds sexual imagery of children which ‘appears to have been’ made by Grok

The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) charity said its analysts had discovered “criminal images” of girls aged 11 to 13 that “appeared to have been created” using Grok.

The artificial intelligence tool belongs to Elon Musk’s company xAI. It can be accessed through the website and app or via social media platform X.

IWF said it found “sexualized and topless images of girls” on a “dark web forum” where users claimed to have used Grok to create the images.

The BBC has approached X and xAI for comment.

IWF’s Ngaire Alexander told the BBC that tools like Grok now risk “bringing sexual AI images of children into the mainstream”.

He said the material would be classed as Category C, the lowest level of violent criminal material under UK law.

However, he said that the user who uploaded the photo used a different artificial intelligence tool, not made by xAI, to create the Category A image, the most serious category.

“We are extremely concerned about the ease and speed with which people can create seemingly photorealistic child sexual abuse material (CSAM),” he said.

Charity, aims to remove child sexual abuse material It operates an online hotline where suspected CSAM can be reported and employs analysts who evaluate the legality and seriousness of this material.

Analysts found the material on the dark web; The images could not be found on the social media platform X.

X and xAI were previously contacted by Ofcom following reports that Grok could be used to create “sexualised images of children” and undress women.

IWF said it had received reports of such images of X, but so far they had not been assessed as meeting the legal definition of CSAM.

In an earlier statement, X said: “We are taking action against illegal content on

“Anyone who uses or encourages Grok to create illegal content will be subject to the same consequences as if they had uploaded illegal content.”
