Sydney Sixers defeat Melbourne Stars raising questions over Glenn Maxwell’s form

His lucky form doesn’t seem to matter much in T20 cricket because Glenn Maxwell’s form in the BBL would be worrying if it did.

He is officially in a slump, and the Stars have joined him as he continues down a familiar path that promises plenty but promises little.

In Thursday night’s defeat against the Sydney Sixers, Australia’s key player in February’s T20 World Cup campaign failed again as the Melbourne Stars lost their third consecutive match.

They never looked like beating the Sixers, who overcame the Stars’ total of 128 possessions with 17 possessions remaining to set up an important encounter against the Renegades at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

But the only interesting part of the night was Maxwell’s performance, or rather lack of performance.

Maxwell lasted four balls before being caught at cover trying to hit Jack Edwards over the bridge overlooking the MCG.

His score was one. He reached that total in the first three innings of 2026 as he looks to rediscover the form he was in when he suffered an ill-timed ankle injury in September last year.

Apart from scoring an impressive 39 runs from 20 balls to beat Sydney Thunder in Canberra on 28 December, Maxwell scored just five runs from 14 balls faced in his other four innings in this tournament.
