Starmer has U-turned 9 times – his latest betrayal will be the worst | Politics | News

Sir Keir Starmer must wake up every morning, spin the wheel and decide exactly which promise he will reject today. It’s like a game show, but all the prizes suck and you and I are still being asked to pay. The man made more U-turns than the student driver in the cul-de-sac. At this point I expect him to announce that up is down, just to keep us on our toes.

Despite his monotonous promise not to tax working people (I’d done it 52 times, I was counting), many people believed him when he rapidly increased National Insurance contributions. That went out the window within a few weeks. He later removed the two-child allowance limit after his own backbench MPs bullied him.

He then threw away his winter fuel payment before a wave of rage forced him to row. But not after Starmer’s masochistic government decided that freezing the elderly was a form of character building, leaving millions of pensioners in distress. Not content with making the elderly happy, he also came for the farmers.

This was followed by months of protests after Sir Keir decided rural Britain was a piggy bank for his government’s long list of wasteful spending projects. Eighteen months later he put it into effect and saved some farms from inheritance tax, but not others. The details are clear as mud, and understandably many farmers aren’t fully convinced he’ll follow through.

Rumors of rate cuts for pubs suggest this is his latest U-turn. Most people need a stiff drink to listen to Starmer, but he seems to have decided that silencing the country’s drinkers by raising their prices might not be the best idea. After threatening to scrap the aid keeping many local residents alive, ministers are now said to be backing down faster than a circus bear on a unicycle. It appears the closure of the country’s pubs has proven to be less popular than expected. Who knew?

Then we have the grooming gangs investigation. One week there was a “far-right caravan” that serious people should ignore. The next week, after public pressure became unbearable, an investigation suddenly became exactly what the nation needed. Waspi women were subjected to similar treatment. Sir Keir did not support claims for compensation. Then he would. Then he can. The man treats principles like a game of hockey coke.

But the worst U-turn is on the horizon. Extensive reports suggest Sir Keir plans to drag Britain kicking and screaming back into the EU single market. Having already re-registered us for Erasmus+ without even asking for permission, it now seems intent on leaving control of our own market to Brussels.

This would be the biggest betrayal.

Maybe Labor seems to have forgotten, but did we vote to leave the Brussels mafia? It’s not a half separation, it’s not a kind of separation, it’s actually a kind of stay. To leave. Take back control, govern ourselves, make our own laws and control our own borders.

Surrendering to the single market would mean accepting EU rules over which we have no say. This means free movement through the back door and intervention by European courts that have jurisdiction over English law.

This means we are separated in name only. Although this is what the elder Sir Keir wanted, we did not actually vote for it. This would make the whole Brexit fight completely pointless.

Rejoining the single market would be a deliberate choice to override the democratic will of the British people. This would be telling 17.4 million voters that their decisions don’t matter, that they can vote as much as they want, but the establishment knows best.

Sir Keir can spin his wheels on taxes, benefits and pubs as often as he likes. He can turn and turn and readjust until he feels dizzy, but if he takes us back to the single market he will be betraying not only his promises but the country itself.

And this, unlike his other comebacks, cannot be undone by another U-turn when the polls go south. This will be permanent and final.

That would be the worst kind of betrayal.
