Emerson Jones remembers playing and losing to then-16-year-old Maya Joint in training sets at the Tennis Australia national academy in Brisbane about three years ago.

Jones was only 14 but was ranked higher than Joint at the time and was already the “it” player being labeled in Australian tennis circles as a key part of the solution in the post-Ash Barty era. Getting used to these new challenges and challengersIt’s all part of the journey Jones is on.

Joint is now 19, Australia’s top-ranked female player and will be seeded for the first time at this month’s Australian Open. Jones, who won’t turn 18 until July, is also taking exciting steps.
Together, alongside younger players Talia Gibson, Taylah Preston and the slightly older Olivia Gadecki, they could put Australian women’s tennis on the map for the next decade or more.
