Delhi-NCR’s cold wave continues as it records season’s lowest temperature at…, AQI reaches…, IMD issues yellow alert

Delhi continued to be shrouded in dense fog and severe cold on January 10 as IMD issued a yellow alert. Temperatures have dropped to 4.6 degrees, air quality has fallen into the ‘very poor’ category and foggy conditions are expected to continue until mid-January.
Delhi is currently experiencing severe winter conditions with dense fog and bitter cold affecting the national capital. On Saturday, January 10, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert warning residents to be careful due to reduced visibility and low temperatures. The minimum temperature dropped sharply to 4.6 degrees, further worsening the winter cold in the city.
Smoke and Fog Combine to Worse Air Quality
Apart from the weather problems, Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated once again, falling into the ‘very poor’ category after a short period of marginal improvement. A mixture of dense fog and smoke covered large parts of the city, affecting visibility and causing health problems for residents, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions.
According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, air quality levels varied significantly between monitoring stations. While areas like Dwarka Sector 8 and JLN Stadium recorded AQI readings near the upper end of the ‘very poor’ range, places like ITO, Dilshad Garden and IGI Airport also reported alarmingly high pollution levels. Persistent toxic air continues to disrupt daily routines, forcing many residents to limit outdoor activities.
There Are Visibility Concerns, But No Flight Disruptions Yet
Extremely poor visibility due to dense fog in the morning increased concerns about road safety and airport operations. Fog was especially evident around the Indira Gandhi International Airport, where runway visibility decreased at times. However, despite the difficult conditions, there were no flight delays or cancellations as of Saturday morning.
Authorities warned drivers to drive carefully, use fog lights when necessary and maintain safe distances to avoid accidents in the early hours.
Foggy Conditions Likely to Continue Until Mid-January
IMD’s extended forecast shows that foggy and hazy conditions will continue for the next few days. Dense fog is expected in the morning hours of January 10, and moderate fog may continue throughout the day in the following period. High humidity levels and constant temperatures can cause poor visibility, especially in the morning and late at night.
Moderate fog is expected to remain a common occurrence from January 11 to January 15, and no additional weather warnings have been issued so far. Although no major changes in temperature are expected, commuters and travelers are advised to remain vigilant and plan their journeys carefully as winter conditions show no signs of easing.
