Greggs boss gives ‘real reason’ its snacks have got smaller | UK | News

Greggs, the UK bakery chain famous for its pastries, sausage rolls and sweet treats, is downsizing its snacks and offering healthier options to meet changing customer demands. The rise of popular appetite suppressants is reshaping eating habits, with more people seeking smaller portions and higher protein choices, the company says.

Roisin Currie, CEO of Greggs, explained that this shift is part of a wider trend towards healthier eating. “Customers are increasingly looking for products that are smaller, packed with protein and fiber, and better aligned with their health goals,” he said. Greggs has responded by adding new items to its menu that appeal to these preferences, without abandoning its classic offerings.

Greggs’ menu is known for its traditionally hearty and indulgent dishes.

The bakery chain’s best-known products include the Greggs sausage roll, steak bake, vegan sausage roll and a range of sweet pastries such as scones and jam-filled cakes.

These products have long been a staple for people looking for quick, filling meals or snacks on the go.

But as eating habits have evolved, Greggs has expanded its menu to include options designed for health-conscious customers. BBC reported.

In 2023, the company launched protein-rich snacks and egg pots, a versatile breakfast or light lunch option.

These additions complement the “Egg at Greggs” campaign and appeal to customers taking GLP-1 appetite suppressant medications, which reduce overall hunger and encourage smaller meals.

Currie emphasized that Greggs wants to make sure it offers suitable options for these consumers, from lighter snacks to products high in protein and fibre.

This trend is not unique to Greggs. Supermarkets such as Tesco have also seen increased demand for fresh produce and protein-based products, partly due to the popularity of weight loss pills.

Analysts suggest that the emergence of these drugs has subtly changed the country’s eating habits, with consumers opting for smaller portions and more nutrient-dense foods.

Other factors also play a role in decreasing snack sizes. Downsizing, which reduces product size while keeping prices the same, is a way for food companies to manage rising ingredient costs.

Government policies, including banning junk food ads before 9pm, further encourage companies to offer healthier options.
