Telangana Govt to Boost Sand Bazaars to Curb Illegal Mining

Hyderabad: In a bid to curb illegal sand mining, the Telangana Mineral Development Corporation (TGMDC) announced plans to expand sand markets across the state after consultations with Vigilance and Enforcement officials. This move aims to ensure stable availability of sand during the rainy season and prevent black market operations.

According to TGMDC officials, pre-bookings for sand from June to October 2026 are now open. The company plans to supply quality sand at affordable prices by fixing the price at Rs 1,450 per metric tonne (MT). This initiative is designed to deter consumers from turning to illegal suppliers who charge exorbitant amounts.

Recent joint raids by V&D and mining authority officers revealed widespread violations. Even though the beaches were closed at night in Birkur, vehicles carrying sand were seen. While vehicles were seized from Madnur police limits in Kamareddy district, six vehicles were caught speeding in Medak and carrying sand illegally from Papannapet.

Bulk bookings for coarse sand are available at Bowrampet, Vattinagulapally, Adibatla and Abdullapurmet sand markets to meet seasonal demand. Applications can be made online between January 8 and January 18; Shipments are planned to last from June to October.

Officials added that additional stockyards will be set up near Hyderabad, besides the existing four markets, to ensure continuous supply. Consumers can book quantities ranging from 32 MT to 5,000 MT. While coarse sand is priced at Rs 1,600 per MT in 2025, the advance booking plan offers it at a discounted price of Rs 1,450 for 2026.

The decision came after reports that malicious people were smuggling sand from closed areas and selling it at high prices. By expanding official supply channels, TGMDC hopes to control illegal transportation and stabilize the market.
