James Shortland Quartet & Lerner / Jansen / Greenhill ★★★★
The jazzlab, June 15
One of the most valuable aspects of Melbourne Jazz Cooperative’s weekly presentations in Jazzlab, the platform for young and developing artists helps to create a profile with local viewers.
On Sunday night, Double Bill matched two young communities that shared the same drummer (George Greenhill from Sydney). The opening set was recently directed by Bassist James Shortland, who recently moved from Sydney to Melbourne and developed his voice as a composer. He presented his attractive original melodies in a quadruple environment with Greenhill and two Melbourne players (Saksafonist Toby Barrett and pianist James Bowers).
Bowers played an important role in shaping the dynamics of each piece and offers lyric promotions in Ballads Ceiling lightAnd gaining momentum under the animated solos of group friends. A few melodys were floated with a subtle Latin low -flow courtesy of Sortland and Greenhill, including the last number of the set (including the last number of the set (Emergence)It was insufficient with temperature and positivity.

Greenhill returned to the second set and formed one third of a powerful Sydney -based trio. Since 2020, the drummer has been working with Saksophonist Ben Lerner and Bassist Nick Jansen and three of them have developed a strong convincing group sound.
Their impressive first albums – Play Triple – Newly published, including the compositions of the artists who inspired them. Sean Wayland’s John BarkerThe agile reflexes were exhibited because they ran to the melody with tense sensitivity before they became an angular solo.
Kurt Rosenwinkel’s Synthetics Jansen and Greenhill have pushed in the rhythm like Ebulistic Jockeys, a fast, caught by BOP, Llerner’s lines rolled with remarkable fluency. Lykeif The divided tone Squawks had a wider, open -time feeling, including a powerful three -way dialogue of discovery bass and texture.
Greenhill is now a rare opportunity to see some exciting young players who are good and really rising in the stars in New York (and Lerner to be followed soon).

Invenio – Lice and Parts ★★★★
Tempo Rubato, June 12
I still have live memories of seeing Invenio’s first show – He went without saying – in 2010.
He presented a sequence of arrest that investigates expanded vocal techniques, non -verbal songs, improvisation and choreographed movements with the songs of fourteen singers (including the leader and composer of the group Gian Slater), complex multi -party harmony and poetic lyrics. Some passages were surprisingly strange and experimental; Some of them are so sensitive and moving that they left the audience members to tears.
Eleven and a half years later, Slater’s vision of an unusual vocal community continues to carry rich fruit, and Inventio serves as a sign of creativity and commitment in Melbourne’s art music community. Slater now has a collective consisting of approximately 30 dedicated singers on Thursday night on Thursday night Tempo Rubato.
This concert was widely changed in Inventio’s 15th anniversary and the program group’s comprehensive rear catalog. Opened with Playful (from He went without sayingThe singers kept with various kitchen appliances – bowls, plates, tea cups – such as twitter, stuttering and whispering, intersecting with excellent sensitivity and overlapping and overlapping and riding on rhythmic cycles.
Unusual vocal community, Invenio.
Eyes fighting Occasionally, there was a feeling of a folk song that is aroused with lush three -piece harmony, which occasionally dedicated to fine trils or drones. Open Growth PainsBass and tenor sounds sang the lyrics, Altos and Sopranos trembled, threw pulse and a series of long, non -verbal sigh.
And Warm bodies – Perhaps the most effective part of the night – the singers moved down the corridors and behind the room while singing, and surrounded the audience in a delicate harmonic area with a quiet, almost divine beauty.

In addition, we have heard three new pieces from an upcoming album, although it is an impressive milestone for 15 years, he argues that Invenio’s journey of inspiration and discovery is far from ending. It may take long.
