EDF’s first ‘free electricity’ Sunday is closing in – eligibility | UK | News

EDF Energy customers have been able to enjoy ‘free electricity’ throughout January and February, with the first date planned for next week. This benefit forms part of the supplier’s ‘Market Savings Challenge’, which was first introduced in 2024.

The initiative rewards eligible customers who increase their daily electricity usage beyond the weekday peak hours of 4 to 7 p.m. The more energy is moved to off-peak periods, the more free electricity customers can receive the following Sunday.

This could mean between four and 16 hours of free electricity on four designated Sundays from January 2026. Rich Hughes, Retail Director EDFHe said: “January is a time when many people are looking for new ways to save money after the festive period, so we’re delighted to be continuing our Savings Sunday challenge.

“More than 210,000 of our customers have been rewarded with free electricity as a result of adjusting their daily usage habits, reducing their carbon footprint and taking steps that will contribute to a more sustainable electricity grid.”

The EDF plan comes as millions of people are struggling with rising energy bills this winter. Ofgem’s energy price cap increased by 2% between October and December, with a further 0.2% increase taking effect from 1 January.

This means typical dual fuel households paying via Direct Debit will pay around £1,758 a year. Those who want to take part in the Sunday Saver Challenge will need a working smart meter for their electricity and will need to allow half-hourly meter readings.

Registration opened on Sunday, January 4 and closed at 23:59 the same day; The competition will start on Monday, January 5. EDF announced that participants can use the free electricity they earn on four Sundays:

  • January 18
  • January 25
  • February 1
  • 8 February

Progress in the challenge can be tracked through EDF’s Energy Center, accessible via ‘My Account’. More advice on EDF’s website he explains: “By making small changes to your energy habits you should be able to get free electricity pretty easily.

“For example, everyone in the house can charge their devices outside of peak hours; you can run the dishwasher in the morning or batch cook meals on the weekends.

“Go to the Energy Center in My Account to see when you’re using the most electricity. Here you can also track your carbon savings and free electricity. We know changing habits can be difficult, but we hope you’re up for the challenge!”
