United States President Donald Trump has assumed the role of Vice President of Venezuela.
The US leader said on Sunday, January 11, He posted a picture on his social media The site Truth Social claims to be the South American country’s acting leader, nearly a week after an elite US military force captured President Nicolas Maduro in an overnight operation.
However, Venezuelan politician Delcy Rodríguez took over the South American country shortly after the arrest.
Maduro, 63, and his wife, Cilla Flores, 69, were captured in a night raid by an elite squadron of the US military on Saturday, January 3.
The Venezuelan leader has been called a dictator and was indicted on drug and terrorism charges in a court in the Southern District of New York in 2020.
Days later, Trump said Venezuela would transfer millions of barrels of oil to the United States. He added that the oil would be sold at market price and he would control the money.
On Friday, January 9, Trump met with oil executives to raise $100 billion to tap Venezuela’s oil reserves. Executives say they are cautious because the country has a history of asset seizures and political turmoil.
At the meeting, he said, “Our giant oil companies will spend at least 100 billion dollars of their own money, not the state’s money. They do not need state money. But they need state protection.”
Trump’s claim to be Venezuela’s interim leader comes amid growing concerns that Washington is targeting other countries including Greenland, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia and Iran.
The acquisition of Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, has been one of the issues of constant interest of the American president.
The Mirror previously reported that Trump was discussing “a range of options” for taking over the region.
British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and other European leaders have sounded alarm bells and insisted the US president must abandon threats to seize the region.
