Limerick house fire tragedy: Woman’s body found in horror blaze | UK | News

Gardai are investigating the body of a woman found following a devastating house fire in Limerick tonight. The woman, believed to be in her 60s, was found inside the property at Chester Downes, Singland, in the Castletroy area.

While the house became completely unusable due to the fire, medical teams arrived at the scene. Gardai cordoned off the property and it is understood no foul play is suspected. Firefighters from Limerick City and County Fire and Rescue Service were alerted by a member of the public at 5.22pm and arrived at the scene within four minutes.

Four units from the service’s city station responded and extinguished the fire; The last unit returned to its Mulgrave Street base at Mulgrave Street at 19.15.

Fire crews came to the scene upon notice and found the woman’s body. In her speech at the memorial ceremony, the woman’s friends described her as a “hard-working mother”.

“He worked hard all his life, this is a terrible tragedy, may he rest in peace,” a family friend said.

A Garda statement said: “Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire that occurred in Singland, Limerick, on the evening of Saturday 17 January 2026.

“Emergency services were alerted to a fire at a residence in Chesterfield Downs at around 17.30. A woman in her 60s was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

“His body currently remains at the scene for technical examination. The outcome of the post-mortem examination will determine the course of the Garda investigation.”
