Fishing on a frozen river for respite from the war in Ukraine

Kiev is miles from the front lines, but Ukraine’s war with Russia is never too far away, with Moscow’s missile and drone attacks on the city almost daily.

The BBC speaks to men on the frozen surface of the great Dnipro River who spend hours fishing to take their minds off the almost four-year conflict that has left homes unheated after Russia’s attack on power stations.

Poking holes in the river ice in the heart of the city, these ice fishermen (most of whom are experienced, with friends and family leading the way) hope to catch small fish and get some rest.

BBC’s Wyre Davies reports.
