Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that his country is ready to protect the sovereignty of Greenland in accordance with its NATO commitments, as tensions with the United States continue to increase.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Carney expressed concern about the increasing friction between America and Greenland. But in a striking display of commitment to established principles, Carney emphasized that Canada’s allegiance was to NATO, not just the United States.

Questioned by reporters, Carney said: “From Greenland’s perspective, the future of Greenland is a decision for Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.” “We are NATO partners with Denmark and therefore our partnership continues, our obligations under Articles 5 and 2 continue.”

Article 5 of the NATO agreement includes the collective defense provision; This article states that an armed attack on one member is considered an attack on all members and requires others to provide assistance, including military force if necessary, to restore security. Meanwhile, Article 2 promotes economic cooperation and peaceful diplomatic relations.

The Canadian Prime Minister’s remarks came after US President Trump’s intense statements regarding Greenland in recent weeks; Trump claimed that America’s takeover of the region was necessary for national security purposes. Trump argued that failure by the United States to secure the mineral-rich island would result in China or Russia doing so.

Despite this, both Greenland and Denmark have shown minimal willingness to cede ownership of the region to the United States. Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen made clear at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that his country would put NATO and the European Union ahead of American interests.

“If we have to choose between the United States and Denmark, we will choose Denmark,” Nielsen said. “We choose NATO, we choose the Kingdom of Denmark, we choose the EU.”

He absolutely refused Donald TrumpRepeated suggestions that the area could be purchased.

“One thing needs to be clear to everyone: Greenland does not want to be owned by the United States,” he said. “Greenland does not want to be governed by the USA, Greenland does not want to be part of the USA”

“We choose Greenland, which as we know it today is part of the Kingdom of Denmark,” he concluded.

Representatives from Greenland and Denmark held talks with the Trump administration on Friday about the American president’s continued efforts to purchase the island. Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stated that the delegation meeting with Washington should focus on closing the gap between the countries, including addressing Trump’s national security concerns.

Speaking after the meeting, Rasmussen said, “In our view, the group should focus on how to address America’s security concerns while respecting the red lines of the Kingdom of Denmark.” He noted that the US and the Danish and Greenland delegations have “fundamental differences” on the future of the Arctic island. In light of Trump’s persistent campaign, several European countries confirmed this week that they would intervene militarily in Greenland.

France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Norway and the Netherlands announced that they would send personnel to participate in the military exercise led by Denmark.

Estonia has also begun preparations and is “ready to put the boots on the ground if requested.”

The exercise is being carried out on an intergovernmental basis and NATO is not involved in the operation.
