Large bloom of jellyfish take over popular beach in Melbourne

A large bloom of lion’s mane jellyfish washed up on a popular beach in southern Victoria on Sunday.

Sandringham Beach in Melbourne was quickly closed after a swarm of jellyfish appeared, although they are not poisonous.

But jellyfish have long tentacles, which can cause extremely painful sting and serious allergic reactions in some people.

It can also cause redness and itching.

Sandringham Life Saving Club warned beachgoers on social media: “There’s a huge Lion’s mane Jellyfish smell in the bay today!” he warned.

The club appealed to swimmers to stay out of the water.

“There will be patrol officers on hand outside, but the beach will be closed,” he said.
