US President Donald Trump has warned that a deal for Greenland will be ‘done’ as Prime Minister Keir Starmer begins his speech addressing tariff threats.
Addressing the UK, Starmer said that any decision regarding the future of Greenland “belongs solely to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Trump also appeared to rule out the possibility of retaliatory tariffs after announcing his plan to impose tariffs on Britain and other countries that oppose his plan to take over Greenland.
‘Tariff war is in no one’s interest,’ Starmer said. ‘We haven’t gotten to that stage, my focus is to make sure we don’t get to that stage.’
Trump announced on the Truth Social platform that the United States will impose a 10 percent customs duty on all exports from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom as of February 1, and will increase this rate to 25 percent in June.

This comes after Trump announced on the Truth Social platform that the US will impose a 10 percent tax on all exports from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom from February 1, increasing the rate to 25 percent in June.

WATCH: Starmer says defending UK values is important
Starmer says Greenland’s future belongs “solely to the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark”
“There is a principle here that cannot be set aside because it goes to the heart of how stable and reliable international cooperation works,” Starmer says.
‘And therefore any decision regarding the future status of Greenland rests solely with the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark. This right is fundamental and we support it.’
Starmer says close relationship with US ‘keeps Britain safe’
‘Our cooperation on defence, nuclear capability and intelligence remains as close and effective as anywhere else in the world, keeping Britain safe in an increasingly dangerous environment,’ says Starmer.
‘We have protected British jobs and manufacturers by ensuring good trading conditions in key sectors including cars, steel, aviation and life sciences.
‘That’s why we adopt this approach, because it produces concrete results in the national interest.’
Starmer says he is determined to keep UK-US relations ‘strong, constructive and results-oriented’
Starmer begins his speech by saying that, given that things have been ‘noticeably more turbulent in recent weeks’, the most important thing is to be clear about the values that guide the UK.
He says the UK has values that are ‘not improvised but patiently built over time’.
He said the US and the UK were “close allies and close partners”, adding that the relationship was “extremely important”.
He says he is committed to keeping this relationship ‘strong, constructive and focused on results’.
