Mystery As Statue Honoring Late Golfing Legend Suddenly Disappears

MADRID, Jan 20 (Reuters) – Spanish authorities have launched an investigation after the disappearance of a statue commemorating golfer Seve Ballesteros in his hometown of Pedrena, near Santander in northern Spain’s Cantabria region.
Marina de Cudeyo City Council confirmed the incident via its social media accounts on Sunday, calling the disappearance an “unfortunate incident” and suggesting foul play.
“Everything points to this being a theft,” the council said.
The statue, which was a focal point in little Pedrena as a tribute to Ballesteros’ enduring legacy, disappeared over the weekend, local police told Reuters, adding that they were now working to identify those responsible and recover the tribute.
“If anyone has observed any suspicious activity, especially in the last 24 hours, please report it to the police,” the city council urged in a post on Facebook.
The life-size statue of the late golfer was located in La Barquería Park and was created by sculptor Salvador García Ceballos in 2009.
It was permanently established in 2017.
The statue is made of bronze and depicts him in one of his most characteristic poses, his fist raised in a triumphant gesture after winning the British Open at St Andrews in 1984.
