Collie bushfire: Residents told to stay on high alert as firefighters battle to contain blaze

A bushfire burning in the south-west town of Collie has been brought under control, but locals have been warned to remain vigilant.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services put the emergency alert on watch and took action around 4:27 p.m. Wednesday after firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.

However, the forest fire was still not under control; Locals in the demarcated area, including Crampton Street, Prinsep Street, Mungalup Road, Minninup Road, Minninup Pool, Skipworth Road and McVee Road, have been told to remain vigilant and monitor their surroundings.

While the fire was first reported around 13:00, firefighters rushed to the scene to fight the fire. Water bombers were also sent to assist ground crews.

The mercury dropped to 37.1C around 1pm on Wednesday and then rose to a sweltering 37.7C around 2pm.

A number of roads were closed, including McVee Road.

Drivers are asked to stay away from the area, reduce their speed and drive carefully.
