Australians offer kindness on national day of mourning for Bondi terror attack victims

Thousands of Australians are expected to perform acts of kindness on Thursday to remember the victims of last month’s Bondi terror attack, as the Jewish mitzvah tradition spreads across faiths and backgrounds.

A core value in Judaism, mitzvah has come to mean any act of charity, and Australians are asked to observe a national day of mourning.

Mourners will also gather at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday evening for an official national commemoration ceremony organized by Bondi Chabad with the theme “Light Will Win, Gathering in Unity and Remembrance” with support from the federal government, community partners and faith leaders.

Prime minister, Anthony Albaneseopposition leader, Susan Ley and the premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, He will be among the speakers at the invitation-only event.

Those on the guest list include terrorist attack survivors, families, first responders, community leaders and other government representatives.

Sale of purple tomatoes approved

The new fruit, approved by regulators on Wednesday, gets its color from added anthocyanin pigments — the same compounds found in blueberries and blackberries.

Daniel TanA professor of agricultural science at the University of Sydney visited the laboratory at the John Innes Center in 2010 and said anthocyanins had been added to tomatoes from snapdragon genes.

“High levels of anthocyanins are associated with potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects,” he said.

Joseph PeglerAnthocyanins have been shown to provide protective effects against a range of chronic diseases, said the senior lecturer at Newcastle University and honorary treasurer of the Australian Association of Plant Scientists.

“Purple tomatoes are rich in anthocyanins, so they have the color and beneficial compounds of popular fruits like plums and blackberries,” Pegler said.

Temperatures will rise above 40 degrees in Melbourne and Adelaide

Melbourne and Adelaide will top 40 degrees over the long weekend of January 26, following a severe heatwave in early January.
