Maggie Haberman Says Trump’s Greenland ‘Deal’ Appears To Be ‘Something That Is Already in Existence’

Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday after weeks of demanding Denmark hand over Greenland. President cited “national security” reasons despite a 1951 treaty allows The USA will expand its military presence on the island, where it already has a base.

“So Maggie, do you understand what President Trump is getting from Denmark in Greenland that the United States doesn’t already have? actual control?” Anderson Cooper he asked.
“No. And look, Anderson, we don’t know the answers to these questions,” Haberman replied. “There’s a lot left unsaid. The president hasn’t responded to that.”
Based on the little information provided about the “framework,” Haberman said it appears to be a reflection of a pre-existing arrangement between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.
“As of now, based on what they are talking about, it seems like they are talking about something that already exists,” he continued. “And the United States actually had a larger military presence in Greenland. It became smaller after the Cold War.”
He noted that Trump slandered NATO in his Davos speech and questioned whether it would come to the defense of the United States. In fact, NATO’s collective defense provision appeared to be activated only after the September 11 attacks on behalf of the United States.
“Article 5 [of the NATO treaty] It was called once, and it was after 9/11,” Haberman said. “And it’s surprising that someone from New York doesn’t remember that. And he talks about this in purely transactional terms. And you can see it’s not over. I understand this [NATO Secretary-General] Mark Rutte is trying to calm things down, but European leaders are still quite worried. And leaders in Denmark had been quite alarmed for weeks and weeks before this became even more public.”
