Ukraine peace deal update hours before major Putin meeting today | World | News

Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff gave an important update on a possible Ukraine peace deal. He said peace talks to end the war in Ukraine depend on one issue: an upcoming meeting with Vladimir Putin. Mr Witkoff spoke in Davos this morning before traveling to Moscow to meet the Russian President and said great progress had been made.

He added: “We’re at the end of it now… We’ll get this done.” Jared Kushner, the US president’s son-in-law, will also join the union. Putin said he would meet with the two to “continue the dialogue on the Ukraine deal” and to discuss frozen Russian assets with Mr. Trump’s Peace Board.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner would arrive in Moscow between 16:00 and 17:00 GMT.

Peskov said: “We do not want to comment on the current stage of negotiations, especially ahead of Witkoff’s arrival in Moscow and his meeting with Putin.

“It is clear that the Russian President highly values the peacemaking efforts of President Trump himself and his team, including Special Envoy Witkoff… We welcome these efforts and their effectiveness.”

It comes as Mr Trump prepares for further peace talks with Volodymyr Zelensky after the US president claimed they were “reasonably close” to a deal.

“I believe they are now at a point where they can come together and make a deal. They would be fools if they didn’t.”

The leaders will meet in Switzerland at 12:00 GMT before Mr Zelensky delivers his opening speech at 13:30. He will also participate in a panel called the International Advisory Council for the Healing of Ukraine.
