The Met Office has identified 23 areas in England and Wales that will experience heavy rain by the end of the week. The forecaster has issued a yellow weather warning for rain and wind for much of south-west England and south Wales ahead of the arrival of Storm Ingrid.
The storm, named by Portuguese meteorologists, is expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds of up to 60 miles per hour. The Met Office said this was likely to lead to flooding and disruption to travel, with the weather warning in force from 2am on Friday until 9am on Saturday. According to weather experts, the first band of rain early Friday “could bring another 10-20mm of rain in places within a few hours, which could fall on already saturated ground”.
He continued: “Locally heavy rain is expected throughout the afternoon, evening and overnight, with a drier interlude before showers move northward.
“Another 15-20 mm of precipitation is expected to fall throughout the region by Saturday morning, with 30-40 mm of precipitation possible in places. Considering the saturated nature of the ground, this is likely to cause some flooding.”
“This second period of rain will be accompanied by strong winds and coastal storms, as well as some very large waves. Wind gusts are expected to reach 45-50 mph inland and up to 60 mph along the coast; winds will peak Friday evening, then gradually ease overnight and into Saturday morning.”
People are also warned about possible power outages and flooding of some homes and businesses.
Coastal residents are encouraged to use extra caution when walking near the shore due to potentially large waves.
