Greenland capital hit by power outage after strong winds

A power outage plunged Greenland’s capital into darkness over the weekend after strong winds caused a transmission failure, the state utility said.

Nuuk, home to about 20,000 people and mostly powered by a hydroelectric power plant, was left without power around 22:30 (0030 GMT) on Saturday, AFP reporters observed.

Three hours later, power was only partially restored in some areas.

Utility company Nukissiorfiit said on its Facebook page that strong winds caused a transmission failure and that it was in the process of restoring supply through an emergency power plant.

Internet connectivity was also affected. Internet monitor NetBlocks reported a significant drop in connectivity in Greenland that “will greatly impact the capital Nuuk.”

This comes just days after Greenland’s government released a brochure offering advice to residents on crisis preparedness, which US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to seize by force.
Trump backtracked on Wednesday after meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, saying they had reached a “framework” agreement on the Danish autonomous region.
