The secret to Hamnet star Jessie Buckley’s success… she grew up in a house with no TV!

She rose to fame in the BBC talent show I’d Do Anything and is the favorite to win Best Actress at this year’s Oscars.

But despite being a fixture of the big and small screen for two decades, Hamnet star Jessie Buckley certainly didn’t learn her craft by watching television.

The 36-year-old Irish actress, who grew up in Killarney, Co Kerry, only got a TV set in her teens.

His family said that a childhood without a television at home helped him develop his talent for music and creativity.

In his youth he played the Irish harp, clarinet and piano; his mother, Marina Cassidy, was a harpist and teacher, and his father, Tom, was a musician, poet and historian.

“Not having television allowed them to experiment creatively and spend time in nature as a family,” his uncle Sean and his wife Carol Dempsey told the Sunday Times. ‘Music was his first love, long before acting took over.’

In 2008, Ms. Buckley was a contestant on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s I’d Do Everything, which featured Oliver! He competed against 11 others for a role in the revival of the musical. She plays the role of Nancy.

The Coronation Street actor lost out to Jodie Prenger, 46, and was offered a role as an understudy by Sir Cameron Mackintosh, but she turned it down.

However, she later received critical acclaim with the 2017 thriller Beast and starred in The Lost Daughter, for which she received an Oscar nomination in 2022.

‘She’s always challenging herself with every new role, and also because she wants to make a difference,’ Ms Dempsey said.

Ms. Buckley’s performance as Shakespeare’s wife Agnes in Hamnet has so far earned her a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award.
