NJ Transit Resumes Rail Service Following Winter Storm Blast

(Bloomberg) — New Jersey Transit is resuming rail service after the worst and coldest winter storm in years forced the state-run agency to halt all public transit operations on Sunday.

Due to severe weather, most rail service resumed at 12 a.m. New York time on Monday, according to NJ Transit’s website. The Gladstone Branch, Pascack Valley Line and Princeton Dinky will be suspended.

Kris Kolluri, NJ Transit’s general manager, said at a news conference Monday that the agency expects to run trains on a weekend schedule on Tuesday.

The rail network is a vital link to Manhattan and extends throughout northern and central New Jersey.

“The storm is clearly over, but I remind everyone that the cold weather has damaged not only our infrastructure, but the Northeast Corridor infrastructure that is so critical to our service,” Kolluri said, referring to rail lines used by both Amtrak and NJ Transit in the New York City area. he said.

The agency’s light rail system restarted Monday morning with some delays, and 85 bus lines also restarted, according to Kolluri.

Kolluri called on municipalities that own NJ Transit bus stops to clear snow from those structures to help replenish additional bus routes.

“It wouldn’t be helpful if the only place our customers could stop was in the live traffic lane,” Kolluri said. “This does not mean it is a safe situation.”

Some parts of New Jersey were covered in as much as 17 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service. Cold and icy conditions led the transit agency to temporarily suspend service on light rail, bus and rail lines Sunday.
