Russia on Monday criticized the US-proposed Golden Dome missile defense system, warning that it could destabilize the global nuclear deterrent, according to reports.
Accordingly TASSRussian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev told Kommersant newspaper that the ambitious project was extremely “provocative”.
According to TASS, he said, “The problems arising from the destabilizing actions of the USA in the strategic field continue to grow. It is enough to remember the extremely provocative anti-missile project ‘Golden Dome for America’.”
“This fundamentally contradicts the claim of the inextricable interrelationship between offensive and defensive strategic weapons, which, by the way, was also included in the preamble to the Treaty. “New START” Medvedev added, referring to the agreement that protects US national security by imposing limits on Russia’s deployed intercontinental nuclear weapons.

Russia’s response underscores the Golden Dome’s power as a geopolitical signal to the world, a defense expert says.
“Even before it was built, the dome is military and politically focused and an incredible bargaining chip with U.S. rivals,” defense expert Cameron Chell told Fox News Digital.
“In this case, it’s specifically about Russia and China about the United States’ stance on negotiating peace terms, terms of the agreement, and whether they will deny the United States its existing arsenal.” Dragonfly the CEO claimed.
Golden Dome is a long-term missile defense concept aimed at protecting North America from ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missile threats.
Chell spoke after the Pentagon unveiled its National Defense Strategy on Jan. 23, which calls for a renewed focus on homeland defense, expanded missile defense, counter-drone systems, cyber capabilities and long-range strike forces.
The planned Golden Dome missile defense shield is designed to defeat “massive missile strikes and other advanced air strikes” and will also strengthen military and essential civilian infrastructure against cyberattacks as Russia and China continue to expand their hypersonic weapons programs, the strategy said.

As previously reported by Fox News Digital, China has also pushed back against its Golden Dome missile defense initiative, accusing Washington of undermining global strategic stability and risking the weaponization of space.
“There is great value in the fact that the Golden Dome was talked about and built long before it was even built, not to mention the research and technology development that resulted,” Chell said.
“The stance and economic benefits of building something like this also factor into why the dome is so important.”
The sheer scale of the project is expected to increase its strategic impact, but it could also come with an enormous price tag.
“The dome will take trillions of dollars to build, and it will be the largest military project, probably the largest engineering and technology project ever attempted, so there will be challenges in doing this,” Chell said.
“The United States has a decade of planning, including where to install communications links, radar systems, and early warning systems.” This planning shifts the focus north, Chell said.

“To protect the United States, you want to take things down before you get to the top of the country,” Chell said.
“Places like Canada, even places further north, are becoming drop zones. You want to get those threats as quickly as possible.”
Canada and Greenland are viewed by U.S. defense planners as critical for radar coverage, space tracking and early warning infrastructure.
“The idea is something shot from space, but to do that you need very detailed landscape data of the entire North, and you need access to the North,” Chell said.
President Trump has long argued that the United States should control Greenland for national security reasons, citing its strategic Arctic location and natural resources.
“There needs to be infrastructure and control in the north, Canada, Greenland and places like that,” Chell said. “All this planning needs to be done well in advance, before any activity is undertaken.”

Chell also noted the potential role of drones in supporting Golden Dome’s broader mission.
“Drones can be part of informing the Golden Dome as reconnaissance, surveillance and intelligence tools,” he said, adding that “the entire military complex is integrated.”
