UK drivers warned of fines up to £2,500 for breaking Highway Code rule

Drivers are being warned that they could face serious fines if they fail to properly clean their windows and other vehicle components before hitting the road. Experts at LeaseCar.uk have warned drivers about penalties for driving with a closed windscreen caused by road salt and spray residue, a common problem in the UK’s harsh weather conditions.

Winter continues to have a reputation as the dirtiest time of year on British roads, with salt, dirt and mud accumulating rapidly. In fact, the Met Office’s warning warns that Storm Chandra will pass through the region, bringing bursts of heavy rain that are expected to fall on already saturated ground.

Whether there is a storm or not, neglecting to quickly clean your windows or windshield can lead to legal consequences as it can obstruct the driver’s view of potential hazards. Under the Road Vehicle Regulations 1986, it is prohibited to operate a vehicle on public roads where there is no full view of traffic and the carriageway ahead.

The Highway Code similarly emphasizes the importance of routine cleaning by requiring that a vehicle’s windows and windshields remain clean and free of obstructions to clear vision.

Drivers who fail to maintain an unobstructed view of the road could face a £1,000 fine, three points on their licence, and potential disqualification at the discretion of the court. Fines for obstructed windshield vision can be up to £2,500 for those driving commercial vehicles and vans, including buses and coaches, the Liverpool Echo reports. Devon Live.

In more serious cases, drivers can be charged with careless or reckless driving if driving standards are proven to fall below what would be expected of a competent and careful driver.
